Downey's Hat Trick Helps Field Hockey to 7-0 Win, CC Playoff Spot

Box Score

CARLISLE, Pa. – Senior midfielder Maura Downey (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) netted her first career hat trick, including the game winner, and sophomore forward Jenn Amols (Fredericksburg, Va./James Monroe) tallied the first and second goals of her career to give Gettysburg a 7-0 victory over Dickinson in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Tuesday afternoon at Biddle Field. The win puts the Bullets in the CC playoffs, which begin next Wednesday. Junior goalkeeper Katherine Corkhill (Paoli, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) made three saves for her second shutout of the season.

The Bullets (10-7, 6-4 CC) got on the board first in the 17th minute on a penalty corner. Sophomore defender Anne Ritter (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) passed the ball to sophomore forward Savannah Ruth (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford), who set it up for Downey. That goal would be all the offense Gettysburg needed, but just 1:25 later, junior forward Cristi Farrell (Broomall, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) converted unassisted. Freshman Lexie Hearn (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) also scored in the opening session to give the Bullets a 3-0 lead at halftime.

The Red Devils (6-10, 3-6 CC) managed seven total shots, five of which came in the first half, but were only able to get three on goal.

After the intermission, it was more of the same for Gettysburg. Downey scored a little over a minute into the second half and added her third tally in the 52nd minute. Amols then scored twice in a span of 45 seconds to end the offensive outburst.

The Bullets, which will either be the four or five seed in the CC tournament, will await the results of the remaining conference games to learn their opponent. The game will be played on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at the home field of the No. 4 seed. Game time will be 7 p.m. if the home team has lights, or 2 p.m.
